The Elizabeth Gray Danforth Scholarship is a two-year full-tuition scholarship awarded annually to students graduating from the St. Louis Community College, who are transferring to Washington University.
Any qualified student from the St. Louis Community College who is admitted as a transfer student to Washington University is automatically considered for this unique, competitive scholarship.
The scholarship program, originally named the Women's Society Scholarship, came into existence in response to Chancellor Thomas H. Eliot's request to fund an annual scholarship for St. Louis Community College transfer students. Since that time (1976), the dedicated and generous members of the Women’s Society have sponsored a very talented scholar each year. In 2007, the Women’s Society was pleased to announce two SLCC students as the recipients of the Elizabeth Gray Danforth scholarship.
In 1995, the Women's Society named the endowment in honor of Elizabeth Gray Danforth as an expression of gratitude and admiration for all that she had done as first lady of Washington University for 24 years. She was wife, mother, community volunteer, valued partner of William H. Danforth, the University's Chancellor Emeritus. Mrs. Danforth was an enthusiastic supporter of Washington University until her death in 2005.
