International Student Outreach
For over 40 years the Women's Society has supported programming that welcomes international students and scholars.
The Office for International Students and Scholars is looking for volunteers to participate in community-connected programs that promote international friendships and further cross-cultural awareness. WSWU members can become "unofficial American ambassadors" through the following programs:
- Be Our Guest Program - This initiative provides an opportunity for international students to experience an American family's way of life with WSWU members providing a one-time meal in their home for one or two international students. In many cases, transportation will be necessary.
Download the Guest Volunteer Application - Host Family Program - This is a cultural exchange program between the University's international students and local families who are interested in developing friendships and furthering their cross-cultural awareness. This program also seeks to temper the loneliness students living away from home may face. Host families offer an informal relationship by getting together once a month with their student(s) for family dinners, movies, trips to the theater, sporting events or sightseeing.
- Speak English With Us - This program matches community volunteers with international students and researchers from both the Danforth and Medical campuses who want to improve their understanding of the English language and American culture. Meetings are once a week for about an hour, and volunteers are not required to be trained teachers or have special language skills.
