Who We Are

For over 40 years, the Women's Society of Washington University (WSWU) has benefited Washington University and the community through its support of scholarships, University programs, and lectures, and has continued to expand and enhance its services.

WSWU was founded in 1965 and is an organization of primarily women of all ages from all backgrounds who share the desire to experience the resources of Washington University through education, scholarships, student projects, and leadership.

It is not necessary to be associated with Washington University or live in St. Louis to join.

The Women's Society operates the Bear Necessities shop, located in Umrath House on the South 40. Providing anything from apparel to school supplies, Bear Necessities supports scholarship and student projects.

As of June 2009, WSWU has:

  • awarded 37 full-tuition scholarships to St. Louis Community College graduates.
  • presented 17 leadership awards to graduating senior women.
